This 1978 paper by Chen Guanfen explores the application of borehole gravity measurements in prospecting for chromite ore bodies (especially blind orebodies). Based on forward modeling of spherical bodies, the study analyzes theoretical curves of borehole gravity anomalies (Δg) and vertical gravity gradients (Vzz) for different orebody sizes and distances from the borehole. It evaluates instrument precision requirements, concluding that existing ±10 μGal instruments with 100×100 m grids can detect orebodies above 200,000 tons, while smaller deposits require denser surveys. Forward formulas are derived for spheres, horizontal cylinders, arbitrarily inclined plates, and horizontal layers with borehole effects. A key finding is that single boreholes cannot determine the azimuth of off-hole orebodies, necessitating multiple-hole surveys. The work provides theoretical foundations for borehole gravity method applications in chromite exploration.
